We celebrate the life of our friend, actor and singer Mike Berry, who has died, aged 82. Perhaps my favorite was his Mr. Spooner in the original classic British sitcom “Are You Being Served?” His death marks the end of an amazing 64-year career. He changed the landscape of music and television with his contributions, leaving an indelible mark on generations of viewers.
Berry first rose to fame in the late ’80s after starring on BBC’s Play Days as Mr. Spooner, endearing British children with his dapper style and colorful personality. Beyond his body of work on screen, McCullough made a splash musically, releasing two top 10 hit singles. His preliminary smash “Don’t You Think It’s Time” shot to quantity six in 1963. Then, wouldn’t you know it, in 1980 “The Sunshine of Your Smile” made a glorious comeback to the hit parade. Written in 1913, the latter song’s staying power proved Berry’s last-minute magic hands still had thumbs on the pulse of everything cool.
Berry had proven himself a versatile artist during his career. He appeared in Willy Russell’s play “One For The Road,” and from 1979 to 1981, he played Mr. Peters in the children’s show “Worzel Gummidge.” Most recently, he appeared in the short tribute “Scatterbrook Days” in 2019.
In 2016, Berry made a splash with audiences on the BBC talent show “The Voice.” Judges Paloma Faith, Boy George, Will I.Am and Ricky Wilson were all blown away after he brought the house down with his stunning performance of Buddy Holly’s True Love Ways. His performance underscored his exceptional talent.
Peter Stockton, a close friend of Berry’s, expressed his admiration for the performer, stating, “Mike was an amazing, highly talented performer whose career spanned 64 years.” Whether in heartfelt tributes or personal conversations, his friends and colleagues expressed their anger and sadness at hearing the news of his death. The duo Chas & Dave remarked, “We’re shocked and saddened to hear of the passing of our good friend Mike Berry.” They added, “Mike, of course, went all the way back with Chas as singer with The Outlaws having numerous hits together.”
Berry’s musical career is full of hit songs that rocketed to the top of the charts. Notable releases included on this fabulous record are “Tribute to Buddy Holly” and “My Little Baby.” His latest engagement – at the Half Moon pub in Putney, west London – sold out back in February. This accomplishment only deepens the story of his remarkable and lasting popularity.
He is survived by his wife of 58 years, Susan, and their daughter Kate, and son Paul. Mike Berry’s legacy as a truly gifted actor and musician will be something fans and friends will treasure even long after their passing.
