It is with great sadness that we report a tragic helicopter collision on Saturday, taking the lives of all six people on board. The Bell 206 helicopter, operated by New York Helicopters, took off from the Downtown Skyport in Manhattan at approximately 15:00 local time. The plane had pointed a course right at the Statue of Liberty. Out of nowhere, it turned right, targeting the George Washington Bridge.
Witnesses claimed the helicopter went out of control before crashing. It had crashed into the Hudson River, just off a pier in Hoboken, New Jersey, only a few feet from land. Eyewitness accounts indicate that the helicopter was inverted when it struck the water.
It hadn’t even been 15 minutes into his new gig before tragedy struck. The victims were a family of five from Spain—two adults and three children, and an American pilot. All six were declared dead at the scene.
The accident is under investigation by the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA). This decision was made in direct response to the fatal crash that occurred recently. According to the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB), which will lead this particular investigation, this incident will be the deadliest helicopter crash in New York City since at least 2018.
In her remarks, NYPD Commissioner Tisch emphasized that the cry site’s location. He pointed out that it was “only a few feet off the coast of a pier.”…every one of us was shocked by what happened that day. Because it sits among a very populated urban area, the potential for a far larger catastrophe looms.
To that end police and federal authorities are aggressively searching for leads. They are focused on the final minutes of the flight and what led to its abrupt turn around. In the meantime, families and friends of these victims are grieving their murders. In the interim, community members and elected officials are rallying to support NPOs during this tragic time.
