England coach Thomas Tuchel made a decisive tactical substitution during the 3-0 World Cup qualification win against Latvia at Wembley Stadium. Tuchel made the interesting decision of subbing out Jude Bellingham before the midfielder had a chance to get a second yellow card or red card. It was Bellingham’s first yellow card for a rash tackle. He might have been lucky not to have seen a harsher punishment for a kung-fu style studs up tackle on Latvia’s Raivis Jurkovskis.
Referee Orel Grinfeeld had no choice but to not give Bellingham a second yellow for the latter incident. This procedural ruling afforded Tuchel the opportunity to make a preemptive substitution. The England coach explained his decision, noting that while he was happy with the team's performance, prudence dictated the change to avoid jeopardizing England's commanding position.
Tuchel happy with England’s flying start under his guidance. Goals from Reece James, Harry Kane, and Eberechi Eze did the damage, making it an easy win. The impressive victory lifted England to the top of Group K, keeping Tuchel’s 100% winning streak as head coach intact.
England cruised to a comfortable win in the game. Latvia’s defensive approach made it a less thrilling affair for the supporters. Despite all that, Tuchel agreed with the general conclusion that this was a solid performance.
"But two wins, two clean sheets and we didn't allow any big chances, so there are a lot of positives to take away."
The national team’s coach praised Bellingham’s performance. Other than the very harsh yellow card decision, which he felt was a bit cruel, Bellingham was fantastic and electrifying before being subbed off.
On the balance of play, England were worthy winners on the night, claiming all three points and bolstering their chances of advancing further in the World Cup qualification campaign. The home team remained calm throughout, and aside from one yellow card to the team captain, Latvia had no cards at halftime.
