The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) issued the recall. More than 400 gallons of Hot Ones Los Calientes Verde and Rojo hot sauces are implicated. This recall was initiated due to the risk of contamination with foreign objects, notably plastic. The impacted products cover many sizes, from 5-ounce cans up to 1-gallon and 5-gallon containers.
The Hot Ones Los Calientes Rojo sauce features best buy dates that anyone can remember. You can use the 5-ounce containers through February 10, 2028, and the 1-gallon containers through February 7, 2028. The Verde sauce contains UPC code of 8-51444-00803-5. It has best buy dates for the 1-gallon jugs on February 3, 2028, February 4, 2028, and February 7, 2028. The affected 5-ounce containers have a lot code of Feb 03 2028. The UPC code for the Rojo sauce is 8-51444-00810-03.
Distribution and Response
The recalled hot sauce products were distributed directly and through retailers nationwide, but they may be more common in North Carolina, Ohio, Indiana, and Illinois. Heatonist, the company behind these trendy hot sauces, are adamant this was a one-off occurrence. Then they promise unhappy customers that they have solved the problem completely.
Noah Chaimberg, founder of Heatonist, stated:
"We identified nearly all of the affected bottles before they left our warehouse."
Health Impact and Manufacturer's Role
Even with the recall, the withdrawn product is still deemed by the agency as not likely to result in serious adverse health consequences. The contract production of these hot sauces was managed by Karma Sauce Company. We know that this brand and manufacturer are working collaboratively to assure that similar issues don’t happen going forward.
