Social Media Influencer Faces Backlash Over Baby Wombat Controversy

Sam Jones, a self-proclaimed "outdoor enthusiast" from Montana, is facing significant backlash after posting a controversial video on Instagram. The footage, which shows her separating a baby wombat from its mother while in Australia, has sparked outrage and criticism. With a following of over 90,000 on Instagram, Jones' actions have garnered widespread attention and led to an investigation by Australian authorities.

Jones posted two statements on Instagram last Friday, defending her actions. She claimed she believed the wombat joey was sick or injured at the time. In one of her statements, she expressed, "I was concerned it may have been sick or injured and made a snap judgment to pick up the joey." Despite her explanations, the video has been heavily criticized by the Wombat Protection Society of Australia, which labeled it as "appalling" and accused her of making the video "for social media likes."

The incident has also prompted an official response from the Australian government. Prime Minister Anthony Albanese commented on the situation, advising Jones to "take another animal that can actually fight back rather than stealing a baby wombat from its mother." Meanwhile, Australian Home Affairs Minister Tony Burke noted that "there has never been a better time to be a baby wombat," highlighting the extensive public support for the animal's protection.

Jones' actions have not only put the joey at risk of being harmed on the road but have also led to an investigation for potential violations of immigration laws. Authorities are currently evaluating the conditions of her visa. An online petition has further amplified public sentiment against her, amassing over 20,000 signatures calling for Jones to be banned from Australia.

In addition to defending her intentions, Jones pointed out that "The Australian government allows and permits the slaughter of wombats," suggesting a perceived inconsistency in wildlife protection policies. Nevertheless, her justification has done little to quell the public outrage or the scrutiny from officials.
