In a significant diplomatic development, Secretary of State Marco Rubio announced that Ukraine has agreed to a U.S.-led ceasefire plan, provided Russia accepts the terms. The announcement followed extensive negotiations in Jedda, Saudi Arabia, where Rubio was part of a high-level American delegation. After more than seven hours of discussions, Rubio revealed that Ukraine is ready to halt hostilities and engage in talks to resolve the ongoing conflict.
Rubio's statement came on Tuesday, highlighting a pivotal step towards peace. He emphasized that the United States has lifted its pause on intelligence sharing and will resume security assistance to Ukraine. The proposed ceasefire, spearheaded by the United States, calls for an immediate 30-day cessation of hostilities. However, its implementation hinges on Russia's acceptance.
"Ukraine is ready to start talking and stop shooting," said Secretary of State Marco Rubio.
The negotiations in Jedda were part of a broader U.S. strategy to mediate a peaceful resolution to the conflict that has plagued the region. Rubio clarified that the ceasefire agreement aims to ensure a sustainable peace that respects Ukraine's sovereignty and security interests.
"Today, we made an offer that the Ukrainians have accepted, which is to enter into a cease-fire and into immediate negotiations to end this conflict in a way that's enduring and sustainable and accounts for their interests, their security, their ability to prosper as a nation," stated Rubio.
The U.S.-led initiative underscores Washington's commitment to restoring stability in Eastern Europe. The ceasefire plan, if successful, could pave the way for comprehensive peace talks and long-term solutions to the geopolitical tensions.
