A woman believed to have been seeking refuge from the freezing temperatures was found dead in a burning clothing donation bin in Glens Falls, New York. The incident occurred in the early hours of March 6, when officers from the Glens Falls Police Department noticed flames consuming a donation bin located in the parking lot of a local pizza restaurant. Upon extinguishing the fire, authorities discovered the body of 43-year-old Michelle McFarren.
Authorities suspect McFarren sought shelter from the harsh weather conditions, as temperatures had dipped to a low of 28 degrees on March 6, with the previous day reaching a chilling 24 degrees. While the high reached around 46 degrees on March 6, it was still perilous for anyone exposed to the elements overnight. The Glens Falls police and fire departments did not immediately respond to requests for further information regarding the circumstances surrounding the tragic event.
“This is a stark reminder for our community that, even while Glens Falls has extraordinarily strong services for people who are unhoused and/or in emotional distress and while our police officers keep an eye out day and night for people who are in danger, a precious life was lost in very troubling circumstances” – Glens Falls Mayor Bill Collins
McFarren, born in Bennington, Vermont, was described in her obituary as a "vibrant and spirited individual who lived life with a joy and energy that touched everyone she met." She leaves behind her mother, three children, three grandchildren, and five siblings. Her daughter, Harley McFarren, has set up a GoFundMe account to help cover funeral expenses. Harley described her late mother as a cherished family member who "brought so much love and light" into their lives.
“She was known as the life of the party, always ready to share a laugh, dance, sing, or indulge in a shopping spree” – Michelle McFarren's obituary
“She will be deeply missed by all who knew her” – Harley McFarren
The community of Glens Falls mourns McFarren's passing. In a letter to residents, Mayor Bill Collins expressed his sincere condolences to her loved ones on behalf of the city. The loss highlights the vulnerability of individuals seeking shelter in areas where resources might be limited or inaccessible during extreme weather conditions.
