Former NFL Linebacker Sentenced for $5 Million Ponzi Scheme

John Robert Leake
, a former NFL linebacker, has been sentenced to two and a half years in federal prison for orchestrating a complex Ponzi scheme. Over a span of five years, from 2015 to 2020, Leake defrauded six friends and mutual acquaintances out of $5 million. The scheme, which involved luxury real estate ventures in Los Angeles and Costa Rica, amassed over $8 million in investments. Leake pleaded guilty in September to charges of wire fraud and transactional money laundering. In addition to his prison sentence, he has been ordered to pay $5 million in restitution to his victims.

The elaborate scheme involved bold and exotic pitches, promising lucrative returns from ventures such as gold mines in Ghana and Alaska. One of Leake's victims initially believed they were investing in these gold mines, as well as other financial products. Leake also convinced the same individual to invest approximately $500,000 in a supposed Costa Rican property venture. However, these investments were based on falsehoods, supported by forged contracts and checks that were never sent to any legitimate developers.

A Web of Deception

Leake met one of his victims through mutual friends around 2014, marking the beginning of his deceptive activities. His pitches were enticing and diverse, spanning from gold mines in West Africa to real estate properties in Central America. Despite the promises, Leake used the investments for personal gain, including gambling. Federal court filings from the Central District of California revealed that a significant portion of the funds was funneled into gambling activities rather than the promised ventures.

“Leake stole millions of dollars from friends and acquaintances through bald-faced deception,” – federal prosecutors

Leake's operation followed a classic Ponzi scheme pattern. He paid back some investors using funds obtained from new victims, creating an illusion of legitimacy and returns. Over $1 million directly benefited Leake, with only a fraction invested in the purported gold mining projects in Ghana and Alaska. The fraudulent activities continued until September when Leake admitted guilt.

The Unraveling

In court, Leake expressed remorse over his actions. He delivered an emotional account of his experiences during the initial stages of his sentencing.

“I fell to my knees, sobbing, and began to reflect on all the unforgettable actions I had caused my friends over the years,” – John Robert Leake

His defense attorney, Evan J. Davis, highlighted Leake's gambling addiction as a key factor behind his fraudulent actions.

“Mr. Leake committed these crimes based largely on his being a gambling addict and he feels terrible about deceiving his friends to fuel that addiction,” – Evan J. Davis

Leake's confession included a detailed explanation of how he became entangled in the fraudulent activities and his struggle to escape the consequences.

“I remember feeling lost during the first week, trying to understand how I could have gone down the dark hole from which I thought I could never escape,” – John Robert Leake

The federal court's decision emphasized restitution for the victims, holding Leake accountable for the financial harm he caused.

Impact on Victims and Restitution

The victims of Leake's intricate scheme included close friends and acquaintances who trusted him with substantial financial investments. The betrayal left them not only financially damaged but also emotionally scarred by the breach of trust. The court's order for Leake to pay $5 million in restitution aims to provide some form of redress for these individuals.

Leake's case serves as a stark reminder of the potential consequences of financial deception and the devastating impact it can have on personal relationships. For many of his victims, the financial losses were compounded by the emotional toll of being deceived by someone they considered a friend.
