Alyssa Wehmeyer, a 21-year-old Missouri resident, faces serious charges following the tragic death of her child, which authorities attribute to severe neglect and malnutrition. Arrested on Monday, Wehmeyer is accused of failing to provide essential care, resulting in the child's death on February 28 at approximately 1 p.m. local time. Law enforcement officials placed her under a $100,000 bond as investigations continue.
The investigation revealed that the child had not been fed for over 40 hours, with the last meal provided during the afternoon of February 26. On February 27, Wehmeyer reportedly took three Excedrin pills to alleviate a migraine and subsequently "laid down for a nap," leaving her child unattended in their crib for about 19 hours. The young mother claimed she last saw her child alive nearly 24 hours after their final meal.
Tragically, the neglect extended beyond lack of nutrition. The child suffered from a severe diaper rash, for which Wehmeyer did not seek medical attention. Despite the apparent signs of distress and deteriorating health, she failed to contact anyone for help or medical treatment.
Authorities charged Wehmeyer with one count of abuse or neglect of a child resulting in death. The case is being jointly investigated by the Missouri State Highway Patrol and the Cape Girardeau Police Department. These agencies are working diligently to piece together the events leading up to this heartbreaking tragedy.
