The UK Prime Minister, Sir Keir Starmer, has reaffirmed the nation's unwavering support for Ukraine amid ongoing geopolitical tensions. Starmer stated unequivocally, "we stand with Ukraine for as long as it may take." This declaration comes as Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky expressed readiness to finalize a minerals agreement but continued to press for US security assurances.
In the backdrop of these developments, the invitation extended by King Charles III for a second state visit to Donald Trump has stirred significant controversy. The late Queen Elizabeth hosted Trump during a three-day state visit in 2019, and the former president has accepted the current invitation, expressing that it would be an "honour" to visit the UK. However, opposition parties in Scotland have voiced strong disapproval of Trump's visit.
The Scottish Greens have explicitly stated that Trump is unwelcome in Scotland, forecasting "protests and a great deal of anger" surrounding his potential arrival. Co-leader Patrick Harvie emphasized the discontent that Trump's presence could provoke. Aligning with this sentiment, the Scottish National Party (SNP) has voiced strong opposition, with SNP's Westminster leader Stephen Flynn urging the Prime Minister to "revoke that offer of a state visit."
The controversy is further fueled by Trump's contentious interactions with President Zelensky. At a recent meeting at the White House, Trump accused Zelensky of "gambling with World War Three," drawing criticism from various quarters. Stephen Gethins, the SNP's foreign affairs spokesperson, described Trump's behavior towards Zelensky as "grotesque" and tantamount to "bullying."
In response to these tensions, First Minister John Swinney remarked on the situation, stating:
"Today's events in Washington are a clear cause for deep concern, for shock, for anger."
"We must stand firm with our European allies in the steadfast defence of Ukraine. That is where Scotland stands."
The ongoing war in Ukraine remains a pressing concern, with recent Russian drone attacks causing injuries in the city of Kharkiv. Despite these challenges, President Zelensky had hoped for constructive dialogue with Trump, aiming to secure a minerals deal that would offer the US a tangible investment in Ukraine's future.
Amid these geopolitical dynamics, King Charles III has proposed a meeting in Scotland with Trump to discuss arrangements for the state visit. This location choice is particularly significant as Trump owns two golf courses in Scotland. Nonetheless, Scottish sentiments remain largely oppositional.
The Scottish government has indicated that Deputy First Minister John Swinney, who previously endorsed Kamala Harris, will focus on strengthening ties between the US and Scotland during this period. Despite the political turbulence, there remains an emphasis on maintaining diplomatic relations.
Zelensky extended gratitude towards Prime Minister Starmer for his steadfast support and appreciated King Charles III's willingness to meet on Sunday. This meeting coincides with Zelensky's participation in a summit with European leaders, underscoring the continued international efforts to address the crisis in Ukraine.
