Éanna Hardwicke, known for his portrayal of Rob in the acclaimed TV series Normal People, has expressed his reluctance to see a sequel to the show. Speaking at a pre-Oscars party in Los Angeles, the 28-year-old actor emphasized the beauty of leaving the story to the audience's imagination rather than rehashing it with a follow-up.
The series, based on Sally Rooney's novel, captured the poignant on-and-off relationship between teenagers Marianne and Connell. It resonated deeply with viewers, especially during its release in April 2020, when it became a cultural phenomenon amid lockdowns. Hardwicke’s character, Rob, played a significant role in Connell’s storyline, grappling with themes of depression and the impact of suicide.
When discussing the possibility of a sequel, Hardwicke stated, “It's nicer to leave it in people's imagination, and leave it as it was.” He reflected on the idea of revisiting the characters years later, acknowledging his curiosity: “Of course, part of me is curious, I'd love to see those characters in 15 years.” However, he clarified that while he would be happy to watch a sequel as an audience member, he prefers not to reprise his role as an actor.
Hardwicke also shared insights on his recent project, portraying murderer Benjamin Field in the BBC One true crime drama The Sixth Commandment. He highlighted the importance of approaching true stories with care and purpose, saying, “There’s a responsibility to telling true stories, to know why you’re doing it, why you’re telling the story, what’s the point.” He felt that this project provided depth and scrutiny that resonated with him as an actor.
Despite moving on to new roles, Hardwicke maintains close ties with his Normal People co-stars. “We all stay in touch, which is nice. It was a really special thing for all of us,” he noted. He continues to express admiration for Rooney’s writing, sharing, “I just adore Sally's writing so much. I’m excited every time she releases a new book, so I’m just looking forward to reading what she does next.”
