Efforts to locate Abdur Rahman, a 64-year-old U.S. tourist who disappeared while hiking in El Yunque National Forest, continue with heightened urgency. Authorities launched a search operation on Sunday after Rahman became separated from his group during a trek. Approximately 30 individuals are now actively involved in the search, which is being directed by Puerto Rico’s emergency and disaster agency.
The operation is concentrated in the Rio Grande and Naguabo regions of El Yunque, a renowned tourist attraction situated in Puerto Rico's northeast. The U.S. Forest Service, responsible for overseeing El Yunque, is collaborating with local agencies. The search party has been divided into four groups to cover more ground effectively. In addition to on-foot teams, drones are deployed to aid in the expansive search over the forest's 29,000 acres.
El Yunque is celebrated not just for its popularity among tourists but also for its rich biodiversity, despite being one of the smallest national forests in size. The challenging terrain and dense vegetation make the search particularly complex. Rahman’s relatives have also joined search efforts inside the forest and are reported to be safe.
Rahman’s health conditions add an extra layer of concern. He is known to be diabetic and has a heart condition, which amplifies the urgency in locating him swiftly. His disappearance prompted immediate action as authorities strive to ensure his safety.
As of Monday, search efforts remain ongoing with no new developments reported. The local community and authorities remain hopeful for a positive outcome, continuing their exhaustive efforts to locate Rahman safely.
