Manchester United, one of the most storied football clubs in the world, finds itself in the throes of significant financial and on-field challenges. For the first time since the 1989-90 season, the Red Devils have finished in the bottom half of the Premier League table, currently positioned at a disappointing 15th place. This underwhelming performance highlights their streak of struggles in recent times, with the club on course for its lowest finish in the Premier League era.
Adding to their woes, Manchester United reported a loss of £27.7 million in their second quarter financial results. Over the past three years, the club has faced cumulative losses exceeding £300 million. In an effort to regain financial stability, the club has announced plans to make up to 200 employees redundant, which constitutes 39% of its current workforce of 1,140 people. Omar Berrada, a senior figure within the club, addressed these challenging decisions.
"These hard choices are necessary to put the club back on a stable financial footing." – Omar Berrada
Despite these cutbacks, Manchester United remains committed to its community obligations. The club's annual donation to the Manchester United Disabled Supporters Association (MUDSA) will continue at £40,000. However, recent managerial changes have also contributed to financial strains. The club spent £11 million to appoint coach Ruben Amorim as a replacement for Ten Hag and an additional £4.1 million to hire and subsequently release Ashworth.
On the revenue front, Manchester United stands to receive £16.9 million from the Premier League if they maintain their current 15th position. This is a stark contrast to the £36.7 million earned for finishing eighth last season. With dwindling prospects in domestic competitions, winning the Europa League emerges as their sole realistic route to securing a spot in next season's Champions League. Failure to clinch this trophy could result in a £10 million annual reduction in their sponsorship deal with Adidas.
The club's latest accounts revealed a net loss of £113.2 million for the year ending 30 June 2024, accentuating their financial plight. This figure contributes to an alarming total of more than £370 million in losses over the past five years. Berrada emphasized the urgency of addressing these financial issues.
"We have lost money for the past five consecutive years. This cannot continue." – Omar Berrada
In light of these circumstances, Manchester United's leadership is focused on rebuilding and re-strategizing to ensure future success both on and off the field. Berrada reiterated their commitment to strengthening all facets of the club.
"We have a responsibility to put Manchester United in the strongest position to win across our men's, women's and academy teams." – Omar Berrada
