In a stunning performance, Luka Doncic led the Los Angeles Lakers to a decisive 123-100 victory over the Denver Nuggets, ending the Nuggets' nine-game winning streak. This win marked the Lakers' first triumph at Ball Arena in nearly three years, with their last regular-season victory in Denver dating back to April 10, 2022. Doncic, who finished with a game-high 32 points, will face his former team, the Dallas Mavericks, this coming Tuesday when the Lakers host Dallas.
Doncic's return to form was evident as he went 10-for-22 from the field and tied for the team lead in assists. Despite being sidelined due to a left calf injury since Christmas, Doncic showcased his potential with the Lakers. Prior to this game, he had averaged just 14.7 points on 35.6% shooting in his first three games with his new team. Lakers coach JJ Redick had challenged Doncic before the game to fully immerse himself in the competition.
"He was very locked in on what he wanted to do out here on the floor tonight. Once he started hitting those step-back 3s and got to yelling and barking, either at the fans or at us, or himself." – LeBron James
LeBron James also played a pivotal role in the Lakers' victory, contributing 25 points on 11-for-19 shooting, alongside nine rebounds, five assists, and three blocks. Fellow starters Austin Reaves and Rui Hachimura added to the scoreboard with 23 and 21 points, respectively. The Lakers' collective effort was instrumental in breaking their eight-game losing streak at Ball Arena.
"It's very tough to play here against that team," – Luka Doncic
Lakers coach JJ Redick emphasized the importance of Doncic's role in controlling the offense moving forward.
"I think Luka needs to be the guy that controls the offense," – JJ Redick
Redick's strategy seems promising as Doncic prepares for his first encounter against his former team, the Mavericks. The anticipation surrounding this match is heightened by Doncic's conviction that the Lakers are capable of making an NBA Finals run this season. Doncic himself articulated his aspirations for the team.
"I'm a natural-born wide receiver and he's a natural-born quarterback, so it fits perfectly," – LeBron James
