Gregg Popovich, the legendary coach of the San Antonio Spurs, is not expected to return this NBA season following a mild stroke. Having led the Spurs since the 1996-97 season, Popovich is the most successful coach in NBA history with 1,390 regular-season victories and an additional 170 wins in the postseason, earning five championships along the way. Despite his current health challenges, the 76-year-old has maintained close ties with the Spurs and continues to influence game strategies from afar.
Popovich made history as the oldest coach in NBA history and has been a pivotal figure in basketball for over 25 years. His remarkable career also includes coaching USA Basketball to a gold medal at the Tokyo Olympics in 2021. Unfortunately, on November 2, ahead of a game against the Minnesota Timberwolves, Popovich suffered a mild stroke. As he recuperates, he has been in constant communication with his players, notably Victor Wembanyama, the franchise superstar.
The veteran coach has continued to provide guidance and support to his team despite his absence from the court. Popovich has been actively involved in strategizing and offering insights into game plans. His humor remains intact as he jokes about "giving praise and cussing" to Spurs assistant coach Mitch Johnson, who is temporarily filling his role.
"No one is more excited to see me return to the bench than the talented individuals who have been leading my rehabilitation process," – Gregg Popovich
The coaching duties have fallen to a collective effort, highlighting Popovich's significant influence on the team.
"It's not one person to fill Pop's shoes in this moment. It's a village," – Brian Wright
This reflects the collaborative approach the team has adopted during Popovich's recovery.
Popovich's long-time confidant and architect of many of the franchise's title teams, Spurs CEO RC Buford, expressed confidence in Popovich's recovery journey.
"The same resilience he's shown over the course of our career as a coach, he's approaching his return in his rehab in an incredibly unique way," – RC Buford
Buford also highlighted the strong relationships Popovich has built with former players and their ongoing support during his recovery.
"The relationships he's had with former players and the care they're sharing with him is amazing, and his improvement continues." – RC Buford
His absence has been felt deeply within the team, with players like Chris Paul acknowledging the challenges faced this season.
"It is wild to think of the circumstances and the situations that we've been through as a team this year," – Chris Paul
Despite these challenges, Popovich's presence remains strong through his continued involvement and communication.
