Tensions have long characterized the relationship between Washington and Beijing, with disputes ranging from trade to technology. Former U.S. President Donald Trump recently hinted at the possibility of Chinese President Xi Jinping visiting the United States, although he refrained from providing a specific timeline. Trump's comments came during an interaction with reporters on Air Force One, where he also discussed ongoing negotiations with China regarding TikTok and the potential for a new trade deal between the two global powers.
Xi last visited the United States in November 2023 for a summit with then-President Joe Biden. Since then, interactions between the two countries have focused on critical issues such as trade tariffs and technology. Trump and Xi previously discussed topics including TikTok, trade, and Taiwan before Trump assumed office on January 20. Trump indicated that discussions with China about TikTok continue as the United States seeks to facilitate the sale of the app, owned by Chinese parent company ByteDance.
"We'll have, ultimately, President Xi, we will have everybody coming (to the U.S.)," said Donald Trump.
A conversation between Xi and Trump is seen as crucial to potentially easing or delaying trade tariffs that have impacted both economies. While Trump confirmed he spoke with Xi since taking office, he did not divulge details of their conversation. The Chinese foreign ministry, meanwhile, referred to their scheduled call before Trump took office without directly addressing his recent remarks.
In addition to U.S.-China relations, Trump also expressed optimism about resolving international conflicts, particularly the ongoing war in Ukraine.
"We can make a deal with Russia to stop the killing," stated Trump, suggesting that Russians might be inclined to end the conflict.
Xi has visited the U.S. five times during his presidency, with his most recent visit leading to significant agreements on military communications and measures to curb fentanyl production. The potential for another visit raises questions about future negotiations and the evolving dynamics between the two nations.
