The conference's agenda prominently features the future of Ukraine, peace talks with Russia, and the restructuring of Europe’s security and defense framework. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, a key figure at the event, has proposed an economic pact with Washington to secure Ukraine's post-war security through its rich deposits of critical minerals. He emphasized the need for "security guarantees" before engaging in any discussions with Russia, highlighting the ongoing tensions.
Zelenskyy met with U.S. Vice President JD Vance on Friday to explore potential pathways for a peace agreement between Russia and Ukraine. Despite his efforts, several of Zelenskyy's conditions for an agreement, including NATO membership and reverting to Ukraine's pre-2014 borders, have been met with skepticism by U.S. officials. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth remarked that Ukraine would need to double its army's size if NATO membership remains unattainable. U.S. President Donald Trump has been clear that stationing U.S. troops in Ukraine is not an option, though he hinted at the possibility of a bilateral agreement involving Ukraine and other stakeholders.
Zelenskyy has expressed concerns regarding Russia's intentions, asserting that Russia views Belarus as another province under its control. He warned of Russia's plans to deploy troops to Belarus under the guise of training exercises later this summer, posing a potential threat to neighboring NATO nations. In response to these developments, Zelenskyy called for the establishment of a European army to bolster defense capabilities across the continent.
