LeBron James Sits Out First All-Star Game in Two-Decade Career

LeBron James
, one of the most iconic figures in basketball history, made headlines on Sunday night as he sat out the NBA All-Star Game for the first time in his career. The decision came due to lingering discomfort in his left foot and ankle, despite being selected as a starter for a record 21st consecutive year. James announced his withdrawal just two hours before the tipoff, leaving no time for an injury replacement to be named.

The 2025 All-Star Game was set to be another memorable chapter in James' illustrious career. However, the discomfort in his ankle was not at a level where he felt comfortable participating. Although he had hoped to play, his health took precedence, leading to his absence from the court. His decision followed a weekend of rest, having skipped Saturday's ceremonial practice and media availability, consistent with his routine for All-Star Weekend over the past two seasons.

James has been dealing with a persistent injury that also caused him to miss the Los Angeles Lakers' victory over the Indiana Pacers last weekend. The NBA acknowledged his two decades of service by granting him a reprieve from the All-Star festivities. Despite this setback, James remains a formidable presence on the court, averaging 24.3 points on 51.6% shooting, with 9.0 assists and 7.7 rebounds this season, having appeared in 48 of the Lakers' 52 games.

Addressing questions about his future in the sport, particularly in light of playing alongside younger talent like 25-year-old Luka Doncic, James expressed no regrets about missing the game.

"No, there's no part of me that has regrets about not doing it."

He expressed enthusiasm for the All-Star Game's revamped format, which featured three teams of eight NBA All-Stars and one team of eight first- and second-year Rising Stars players competing in a round-robin tournament.

"I was looking forward to seeing it."

He also praised the new format and its appeal to basketball enthusiasts worldwide.

"We love our game. The game of basketball is beautiful."

James emphasized the international appeal of the NBA and its growth since he entered the league in 2003.

"The NBA is better from when I entered the league in 2003, and hopefully it continues to be even better when I'm done playing, as well."

Despite his absence, James' team, Team Shaq's OGs, secured the title over Team Chuck. Reflecting on the moniker given to veteran players like himself, James found humor in it.

"I know we've got a lot of great — calling us the OGs, that's hilarious."

Looking ahead, James expressed optimism about returning to action soon. He hopes to be available for the Lakers' first game after the All-Star break against the Charlotte Hornets.

"I hoped I would be available Wednesday."
