Commissioner Adam Silver has announced that Trae Young will join the All-Star roster as an injury replacement for Giannis Antetokounmpo, who is sidelined due to a calf injury. The Atlanta Hawks' point guard will play on Team Chuck, which was drafted by TNT analyst Charles Barkley. The All-Star Game, set to take place on Sunday in San Francisco, has evolved into a mini-tournament of three games.
Trae Young, known for his exceptional playmaking skills, leads the NBA in assists per game with an impressive average of 11.4. He surpasses Nikola Jokic, who holds the second spot in the league with 10.3 assists per game. Despite not being originally selected through the starters' balloting or the coaches' reserve choices, Young has been added to the roster as an injury replacement for the second year in a row.
Young's addition to Team Chuck brings an international flair to the lineup, which includes players from Serbia, Canada, France, Cameroon, Turkey, and Panama. The roster features notable names such as Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, Victor Wembanyama, Pascal Siakam, Alperen Sengun, Karl-Anthony Towns, and Donovan Mitchell. This marks Young's fourth All-Star selection, having previously appeared in the prestigious event in 2020 and 2022.
The decision to replace Giannis Antetokounmpo comes as he recovers from a calf injury that prevents him from participating in this year's game. Meanwhile, Anthony Davis is also expected to miss multiple weeks after leaving his debut with the Mavericks due to an injury. Commissioner Silver may soon announce at least one more injury replacement pick.
