Cannabis Use Disorder Linked to Increased Mortality Risk, Study Finds

A recent study published in JAMA Network Open reveals concerning insights into the relationship between Cannabis Use Disorder (CUD) and mortality rates. Researchers analyzed data from nearly 530,000 individuals in Ontario, Canada, highlighting that people who receive hospital-based care for CUD face a significantly elevated risk of dying within five years. The study's findings underscore the potentially serious health implications of cannabis use, particularly among younger adults.

The study examined individuals with an average age of 30, focusing on those aged 12 and older. It found that over 1 in 5 people reported cannabis use in the past year. Among the participants, about 107,000 sought hospital care related to CUD. The diagnosis of CUD requires meeting two out of 11 criteria, including unsuccessful attempts to cut back, persistent cravings, and continued use despite social or work-related problems. Alarmingly, researchers discovered a 2.8-fold increased risk of mortality within five years for those with hospital-based CUD care.

The findings illustrate the gravity of CUD, particularly among individuals aged 25 to 44 years, where the relative risk increase was most pronounced. Approximately 10% of people who start smoking cannabis develop an addiction, with 30% of current users meeting addiction criteria. The study revealed that within five years, 3.5% of individuals with CUD died, compared to less than 1% without the disorder.

“The findings are sobering,”

“Cannabis use disorder is associated with a higher risk of death than many would expect, especially when considering the magnitude of its rising prevalence,”

The study sheds light on the potential dangers associated with cannabis use and its growing prevalence. It emphasizes the need for increased awareness and appropriate health interventions to address CUD. With over 1 in 5 individuals using cannabis annually, understanding the risks associated with its misuse is crucial for public health.
