“No Other Land”: A Tale of Friendship Amidst Conflict in the West Bank

The West Bank, occupied by Israel since 1967, stands at the center of a compelling narrative brought to life by the documentary film "No Other Land." The film, which highlights the enduring friendship between Palestinian Basel Adra and Israeli journalist Yuval Abraham, has garnered international acclaim, earning Oscar and Bafta nominations for best documentary feature. Despite its accolades, the film has yet to secure a distributor in the United States.

The backdrop for this story is Masafer Yatta, one of over 20 villages in the West Bank. This area has become a flashpoint of conflict, with Israeli settlements deemed illegal under international law. The debate over Masafer Yatta began in the 1980s when Israel designated it as a closed military firing zone. Since then, the tension has escalated, with increasing settler-related violence and Israeli governmental actions allowing home demolitions and the expulsion of over 1,000 villagers.

"I really believe there is no other way forward, other than reaching a just, fair political solution where Palestinians can be free, truly free, and our people, both of them, will have security and self-determination." – Yuval Abraham

The film's narrative delves into these complexities, portraying a landscape marred by conflict yet illuminated by individual acts of courage and friendship. Basel Adra speaks to the power dynamics at play in Masafer Yatta, asserting that Israeli settlers have "unlimited power" in the region. The Israeli government has not publicly responded to allegations of settler violence, although the IDF has transferred a shooting case investigation to the state attorney's office.

"We have regularly taken action against settler violence, including through targeted sanctions, and will continue to do all we can to ensure the rights of Palestinians are protected and that those responsible for violence are held to account." – Israeli government statement

The West Bank has witnessed an alarming increase in violence, with 13 Palestinians killed by settlers since October 2023. The UN recorded approximately 1,420 incidents of Israeli settler violence in 2024, marking the highest number since records began in 2006. In response, the UK has sanctioned three settler outposts and four organizations accused of supporting violence against West Bank communities.

"It's scary because yes, the film is succeeding and people are aware of it, but I don't think there is sufficient action, especially amongst those who have power to change this." – Yuval Abraham

Despite these challenges, "No Other Land" continues to resonate with audiences worldwide. Yuval Abraham expresses hope that the film can contribute to a broader change.

"I don't have an illusion that films are going to change the world, but I know they can change individuals, and I know that they can be part of a bigger change, and we really need this now." – Yuval Abraham

The film captures intimate moments of daily life amidst turmoil. A poignant scene features a mother whispering to her child:

"You're my love… Tomorrow will be a new day."

Another powerful moment includes a young girl's assertion:

"We have no other land."

These personal stories underscore the human impact of geopolitical conflict and highlight the resilience of those living in these communities.

The absence of a U.S. distributor for "No Other Land" raises questions about international engagement with such narratives. While the film's success on the awards circuit showcases its potential impact, Yuval Abraham expresses frustration at the lack of substantial global action.

"It really makes me angry, not only that my government is going in the other way, but that the world is allowing it to happen for so long." – Yuval Abraham
