Arsenal finds themselves in a challenging position as they sit second in the Premier League, trailing leaders Liverpool by six points. Liverpool has played one more game than Arsenal, adding pressure to the North London club as they strive to close the gap. Arsenal's recent 5-1 triumph over Manchester City was overshadowed by significant setbacks, including the season-ending ACL injury to Gabriel Jesus and a hamstring issue sidelining Bukayo Saka. These injuries have forced manager Mikel Arteta to reconsider tactics and adapt his front line's strategy.
The club's transfer window activities have left fans and management disappointed. Despite intentions to strengthen their squad, Arsenal saw three players exit: Ayden Heaven, 17, joined Manchester United, while Josh Robinson, 20, moved to Wigan Athletic. Additionally, Marquinhos departed for Cruzeiro on loan until the end of the season. The extensions of the Champions League and Europa League into January made clubs reluctant to sell players, limiting Arsenal's options in the market.
Football finance expert Kieran Maguire commented on the situation, noting the challenges Arsenal faced in securing new talent.
"As far as the market they would be looking at [is concerned] there are relatively few players," – Kieran Maguire
Mikel Arteta acknowledged the difficulty in securing suitable additions but emphasized the importance of adhering to their strategic goals.
"It's in the profile, a player that we believe can make us much better. Financially there is a lot of ways, a lot of things that we must stay in the lane that has taken us this far and from there try to improve." – Mikel Arteta
Despite missing opportunities in the transfer window, Arteta remains committed to maintaining discipline in their recruitment approach.
"We are disappointed in that sense but as well we are very aware that we only want to bring certain kinds of players and we have to be very disciplined with that as well. I think that we were." – Mikel Arteta
The manager also highlighted the club's efforts during the window, aiming to enhance their squad with impactful players.
"We had a clear intention which is always when a window opens to explore the opportunities to improve our squad with players that can make an impact," – Mikel Arteta
Injuries have compelled Arteta to consider tactical flexibility as he navigates these challenges. The manager expressed openness towards trying different strategies and adapting his team's approach due to the current circumstances.
