In a stunning turn of events at UFC Fight Night, Nassourdine Imavov defeated Israel Adesanya by TKO in the second round. This unexpected outcome marks a significant moment in Adesanya's career, as he faced his second knockout in less than three years, a stark contrast to his previous record of never being knocked down in mixed martial arts.
The fight took place in an electrifying atmosphere, with both fighters showcasing their skills. Adesanya, who was born in Nigeria and currently trains in New Zealand, started strong, demonstrating his renowned striking capabilities. UFC CEO Dana White noted, “I thought Izzy looked incredible until he got caught,” acknowledging Adesanya's performance in the opening round, which all three judges scored in his favor.
Despite Adesanya's effective body kicks and a total strike advantage of 32-to-18, the tide turned dramatically when Imavov landed a powerful right hand to Adesanya's chin. Following this, he followed up with a strong left punch as Adesanya stumbled against the fence. Referee Marc Goddard initially allowed Adesanya a chance to recover, but once he rolled onto his stomach and covered up, Goddard deemed the fight over.
Imavov expressed his satisfaction with his performance, stating, “I said it all week long, that I was in perfect shape and I proved it tonight.” His victory comes after Adesanya took nearly a year off to regroup following a shocking upset against Sean Strickland in September 2023, where he lost his title. Adesanya returned to the Octagon for an immediate title shot against Dricus Du Plessis in August, where he suffered another defeat via submission in the fourth round.
Post-fight, Adesanya appeared to question the referee's decision immediately after getting back to his feet. Nevertheless, he left the Octagon without incident, taking the loss in stride. Reflecting on his recent performance and future plans, Adesanya remarked, “I have to chill and then think about things,” signaling a period of introspection.
This bout marked Adesanya's first non-title appearance since 2019, further emphasizing the shift in his career trajectory. As he faces challenges ahead, fans and analysts alike will be watching closely to see how the former champion rebounds from this latest setback.
