Criterion Capital, owned by billionaire developer Asif Aziz, manages the property where the cinema is located. They have a portfolio that includes numerous hotels and properties in the West End. The building owner, Zedwell LSQ, is pushing for a rent hike and a clause in the lease that could potentially evict the cinema with just six months' notice. The cinema has accused the landlord of attempting to "bully" them out of the premises.
While Criterion Capital insists that the lease terms are standard practice, the cinema views these demands as a threat to its survival. In response, the Prince Charles Cinema has launched a campaign to resist closure, garnering significant public support. An online petition has already amassed over 50,000 signatures, demonstrating widespread community backing.
The cinema is not just a local treasure; it holds a special place in the hearts of renowned filmmakers. Quentin Tarantino has praised it as "everything an independent movie theatre should be" and "for lovers of quality films, this is Mecca." Similarly, Paul Thomas Anderson appreciates its unique appeal, stating:
"The Prince Charles has a place in my heart. It's the people, the programming, the accessibility, feeling, texture… you cannot go wrong."
"You also know that on any given day, you can close your eyes, press your finger to the programme, and you'll hit something great."
Despite these endorsements from high-profile directors, the cinema's future remains precarious. The rental expectations align with fair market assessments according to the landlord, yet the potential lease changes threaten to displace this cherished venue.
