A Premier League match official faces threats and abuse following a contentious decision during a recent football match. The police have launched investigations into the threats aimed at referee Michael Oliver and his family. This surge of hostility stems from a controversial red card issued to Myles Lewis-Skelly in Arsenal's narrow 1-0 victory over Wolverhampton Wanderers. The incident, which occurred in the 43rd minute of the match, has stirred significant controversy, with widespread criticism from pundits and supporters alike.
The decision to dismiss Lewis-Skelly received backing from the Video Assistant Referee (VAR), yet it provoked intense reactions, including from Arsenal's manager Mikel Arteta, who was "absolutely fuming" about the call. Despite the support of VAR for this decision, the backlash escalated to dangerous threats against Oliver and his family, prompting a police investigation.
Professional Game Match Officials Limited (PGMOL), the organization responsible for overseeing referees in English football, issued a statement strongly supporting Michael Oliver amidst the turmoil. They condemned the threats, stating:
"No official should be subject to any form of abuse, let alone the abhorrent attacks aimed at Michael and his family over the past 24 hours." – PGMOL
Similarly, the Premier League expressed its support for Oliver, stressing its commitment to addressing such unacceptable behavior:
"No official should be subject to any form of abuse." – The Premier League
In addition, PGMOL reiterated its shock and dismay at the situation:
"We are appalled by the threats and abuse directed at Michael Oliver following the Wolverhampton Wanderers v Arsenal fixture," – PGMOL
The Premier League emphasized its determination to combat this kind of conduct, underscoring that such threats and abuse are unacceptable. This incident echoes past occurrences, such as when former referee Mike Dean temporarily stepped away from officiating after receiving death threats.
PGMOL assured that it would continue to support Michael Oliver and cooperate fully with all ongoing investigations. As authorities delve into this matter, the football community remains alert to the implications of such hostility towards match officials.
