Neil Gaiman, the acclaimed author of numerous bestselling novels and adapted works, faces serious allegations of sexual misconduct from eight women, four of whom have previously spoken out. The accusations first emerged in January 2023, when a police report was filed in New Zealand accusing Gaiman of sexual assault. Despite these claims, Gaiman, aged 64, has categorically denied the allegations, asserting that he has “never engaged in non-consensual sexual activity with anyone.”
The allegations paint a disturbing image, with one woman claiming that Gaiman offered her a bath in his garden before allegedly joining her naked and later sexually assaulting her. Furthermore, accusations suggest that Gaiman engaged in BDSM activities without prior discussion and consent with his accusers. Some of the women reportedly participated in these activities, referring to him as "master" and maintaining communication with him.
The accusations have had significant professional repercussions for Gaiman. Several of his renowned works, including "Good Omens," "The Sandman," "Stardust," "American Gods," and "Coraline," have been adapted into television programs and films. However, the fallout from these allegations has led to significant changes in ongoing projects. Season three of Prime Video's "Good Omens" will now feature a single 90-minute episode, with Gaiman no longer involved in the project. Disney has also halted production on its film adaptation of Gaiman's "The Graveyard Book."
In addition, Dark Horse Comics has cancelled future publications in the Anansi Boys series, which is a spin-off from Gaiman's novel "American Gods." This decision was confirmed by the publisher:
"Confirming that the Anansi Boys comic series and collected volume have been cancelled." – Dark Horse Comics
The allegations against Gaiman were detailed in a cover story by New York Magazine. Despite the controversy, Gaiman has chosen to remain mostly silent until now, explaining his stance:
"I've stayed quiet until now, both out of respect for the people who were sharing their stories and out of a desire not to draw even more attention to a lot of misinformation." – Neil Gaiman
Gaiman's representative has refrained from commenting directly on the allegations but did make a statement regarding the nature of BDSM:
"sexual degradation, bondage, domination, sadism and masochism may not be to everyone's taste, but between consenting adults, BDSM is lawful" – Neil Gaiman's representative
The impact on Gaiman's career is significant given his contributions to literature and popular culture. His novel "American Gods" was previously adapted into both a BBC Radio 4 six-part series and a Prime Video TV series in 2022. The current allegations threaten to overshadow these successes and raise questions about his future projects.
