San Antonio Officers Injured in Barricade Standoff Expected to Recover

Seven San Antonio police officers
sustained injuries after being shot during a tense standoff with a suspect on Wednesday evening. The officers were responding to a call about a person in crisis, which quickly escalated into a dangerous encounter. The incident unfolded just before 8:30 p.m., when officers arrived at the scene to de-escalate a potential suicide situation.

The suspect, identified as 46-year-old Brandon Scott Poulos, barricaded himself inside an apartment, leading to a prolonged standoff lasting several hours. According to Chief William McManus, the suspect resisted arrest and opened fire on the officers during the incident.

Poulos had a recent history of arrests, having been detained three times on Saturday alone. His charges included two counts of assault and one for driving while intoxicated (DWI). He also faced allegations of violently pushing and dragging two women, one of whom was an 81-year-old who sustained head injuries after being pushed to the ground.

During his time in the Navy, Poulos served for a decade, leaving in 2008. He was recognized with awards such as the National Defense Service Medal and a Sea Service Deployment Ribbon. However, following his service, he encountered legal troubles, including charges of assault causing bodily injury to a family member, two counts of injury to an elderly person with intent to cause bodily injury, and the DWI offense.

After the shooting, Poulos attempted to flee the scene but was later apprehended when authorities discovered his crashed vehicle nearby. The San Antonio Police Department confirmed that six of the injured officers have since been released from the hospital and are recuperating at home.

The department shared in a Facebook post that most of the officers shot are heading home for recovery. The shooting remains under investigation. Despite requests for comment from USA TODAY, the police department has not yet provided further details.
