Manchester United’s Home Struggles Continue with Defeat to Brighton

Manchester United suffered a 3-1 defeat against Brighton & Hove Albion at Old Trafford, marking their sixth home Premier League loss of the season. This result sets an unwelcome record for United, as it is their most home defeats from their opening 12 home matches of a league campaign in 130 years. The Red Devils arrived at their iconic ground having won only one of their past nine league games, underscoring the depth of their current struggles.

Despite managing to rally for a 3-1 victory against Southampton earlier, United could not replicate that form against Brighton. The Seagulls have now triumphed in their last three visits to Old Trafford, each under a different manager. United managed just a single shot on target, courtesy of Bruno Fernandes' first-half penalty. Unfortunately, Yasin Ayari's speculative cross led to a calamitous error by goalkeeper Onana, who fumbled the ball into Georginio Rutter's path, allowing him to score easily.

Since taking over from Erik ten Hag in November, manager Ruben Amorim has led his team to accrue only 11 points from 11 league games. Brighton, on the other hand, needed just three shots on target to net three goals, a feat they last achieved in October against Tottenham Hotspur. Currently sitting 13th in the Premier League table, United are merely five positions and 10 points above the relegation zone.

Despite notable victories over Manchester City and Arsenal and a draw with Liverpool under Amorim's guidance, United has struggled against teams like Nottingham Forest, AFC Bournemouth, and Wolverhampton Wanderers. Amorim has now lost seven of his first 15 games in charge, making him the first United manager to do so since Jimmy Murphy stepped in after the Munich air disaster in 1958.

"We are the worst team maybe in the history of Manchester United." – Ruben Amorim

During the match against Brighton, Manchester United paid tribute to club legend Denis Law before succumbing to another disappointing defeat. For the first time in nine years, United failed to register a shot on target from open play at Old Trafford in a league match.

"In [the past] 10 games in Premier League, we won three. We need to survive now." – Ruben Amorim

Amorim candidly addressed the ongoing issues facing his team, acknowledging the struggles with performance and results. He remains aware of the challenge ahead, emphasizing the need for improvement across all areas of play.

"Everybody here is underperforming; no matter what the circumstances, we are underperforming and have to accept that." – Ruben Amorim

As the team grapples with breaking negative records, Amorim remains focused on addressing these challenges head-on.

"We have to understand we are breaking all the bad records." – Ruben Amorim
