In a dramatic legal turn following the tragic passing of Liam Payne, his friend Roger Nores has filed a defamation lawsuit against Payne's father, Geoff Payne. The lawsuit, lodged in Florida, accuses Geoff Payne of making false statements about Nores' relationship and responsibilities towards the late singer. The suit also aims to donate any financial proceeds to Payne's son, Bear.
Liam Payne tragically died at the age of 31 after suffering "multiple trauma" and "internal and external haemorrhage" from a fall off a hotel balcony in Buenos Aires. The circumstances surrounding his death have sparked widespread speculation and legal scrutiny. Argentine prosecutors have charged five individuals, including Nores, with manslaughter, alleging that he "abandoned" Payne and failed to fulfill his duty of care.
Nores, however, disputes these claims. He insists he "never had a legal duty of care" for Payne, asserting that their relationship was misrepresented. The defamation claim emphasizes that Nores was not responsible for Payne's care, contrary to statements suggesting he and Payne's girlfriend, Kate Cassidy, were tasked with overseeing Payne due to his addictions.
The lawsuit further alleges that Geoff Payne made declarations to Argentine officials that were "false," containing "material omissions" and elements not based on personal knowledge. Nores strongly contests the portrayal that he was ever a caretaker for Liam Payne.
This legal conflict unfolds as the UK inquest into Payne's untimely death remains adjourned until a pre-inquest review scheduled for November 6. His funeral saw attendance from close friends and former bandmates Harry Styles, Louis Tomlinson, Niall Horan, and Zayn Malik. Cheryl, Payne's ex-partner, was also present to pay her respects.
