Historic Ceasefire Agreement Marks New Dawn for Gaza

A landmark ceasefire agreement between Israel and Hamas, poised to reshape the region's future, has been finalized after months of intense negotiations. The deal, structured in three critical phases, aims to end ongoing hostilities and initiate rebuilding efforts in Gaza. The initial phase, set to commence on January 19, will institute a "full and complete ceasefire." This will involve the withdrawal of Israeli forces from all populated areas of Gaza and the release of hostages held by Hamas, including women, elderly, and wounded prisoners. Additionally, hundreds of Palestinian prisoners will be released as part of this phase.

The second phase promises to bring a "permanent end to the war," with the release of all remaining living hostages, including male soldiers. It will also ensure the withdrawal of any remaining Israeli forces from Gaza. The third and final phase will focus on humanitarian efforts, including returning the remains of hostages who have been killed to their families and launching a "major reconstruction plan" for Gaza.

US President Joe Biden praised "many months of intensive diplomacy" that resulted in this significant ceasefire agreement. He expressed optimism, stating that the agreement presents an opportunity to conclude his presidency on a high note. Biden emphasized the importance of reuniting American hostages with their families in the coming weeks.

Former President Donald Trump credited the "epic" agreement to his victory in November's presidential election. He highlighted the agreement's significance in demonstrating his administration's commitment to peace and security for Americans and allies.

"It signalled to the entire World that my Administration would seek Peace and negotiate deals to ensure the safety of all Americans, and our Allies" – Donald Trump

The agreement was meticulously negotiated in Doha by Biden's envoy Brett McGurk and Trump's envoy Steve Witkoff. Their collaboration underscores a rare instance of bipartisan cooperation in foreign policy, with both leaders acknowledging each other's contributions to this historic accord.
