Tom's of Maine is under scrutiny following an FDA investigation that revealed potential contamination issues at its manufacturing facility in Sanford, Maine. Although no official recall has been issued, the company has been instructed to evaluate its production processes and conduct extensive testing of its products. This comes after the discovery of a black, mold-like substance and bacterial presence in the facility.
The FDA's findings included bacteria such as Ralstonia insidiosa in the water used for manufacturing several toothpaste varieties. This bacterium is known to cause serious health issues like blood infections and infectious pneumonia. The contaminated water was utilized in the production of products already distributed to consumers, raising significant concerns about product safety.
Additionally, a batch of Wicked Cool! toothpaste was identified with a problem. During the inspection, a mold-like substance was found at the base of a hose reel and behind the water storage tank. This area was near equipment used to produce Tom's Silly Strawberry Anticavity toothpaste, where powder residue was also detected.
To address these findings, Tom's of Maine is required to test reserve samples of its products for microbiological contamination and verify the strength of active ingredients. Should any products exhibit out-of-specification results, the company must notify customers and initiate a recall.
In response to these concerns, Tom's of Maine has engaged water specialists to scrutinize their systems at the Sanford facility. The company has emphasized its commitment to product safety, stating:
"We have always tested finished goods before they leave our control, and we remain fully confident in the safety and quality of the toothpaste we make." – Tom's of Maine
Despite the ongoing investigations, Tom's of Maine assures consumers that it consistently tests its finished goods prior to distribution. The company maintains its confidence in the integrity of its toothpaste products.
