Stanley has announced a nationwide recall of 2.6 million travel mugs following multiple reports of burn injuries associated with the product. The recall affects several models, including Switchback and Trigger Action mugs, which have been sold in sizes ranging from 12 to 20 ounces. The recalled mugs were available in a variety of colors, including white, black, and green. The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) issued the recall due to a defect in the lid threads, which can shrink when exposed to heat and torque, potentially causing the lid to detach during use.
“These mug's lid threads can shrink when exposed to heat and torque, causing the lid to detach during use, posing a burn hazard,” – U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC)
The specific product codes for the recalled mugs include 20-01437, 20-01436, 20-02211, 20-02033, 20-02779, 20-02825, 20-02030, 20-02745, 20-02957, 20-02034, and 20-02746. The primary concern arises from the potential for the lids to detach unexpectedly, posing a risk of burns to consumers.
Globally, there have been 91 reports of issues with these travel mugs. In the United States alone, consumers reported 16 instances where lids detached. Unfortunately, this defect has resulted in 38 burn injuries worldwide, with two reported cases in the United States. Eleven consumers have required medical attention due to injuries sustained from using these mugs.
In response to these incidents, Stanley advises consumers to immediately cease using the affected mugs. They should contact Stanley for a free replacement lid, which will be shipped at no cost to the consumer. This measure aims to ensure the safety of consumers and prevent future injuries.
