DLocal Expands Horizons: Secures UK License to Onboard New Merchants

DLocal, a prominent Latin American payments firm, has made significant strides in its global expansion by acquiring an authorized payment institution license from the Financial Conduct Authority (FCA) in the United Kingdom. This milestone marks DLocal's entry into the UK market, allowing the company to onboard new merchants for the first time, thereby enhancing its portfolio and reach.

Founded in 2016, DLocal has rapidly established itself as a key player in cross-border payments, focusing on emerging markets such as Brazil, Mexico, Colombia, and its home country of Uruguay. With over 30 licenses and registrations worldwide, the company has built a robust framework to facilitate international transactions. Its recent license acquisition in the UK underscores DLocal's commitment to expanding its services to new territories.

The company currently employs more than 1,000 individuals globally and has developed a strong presence in the UK through its local entity, dLocal Opco UK. This strategic move aligns with DLocal’s broader objective of catering to both domestic UK businesses and global companies operating within the region. By leveraging its expertise in emerging markets, DLocal aims to differentiate itself from domestic payment technology competitors.

As of Tuesday, DLocal's valuation stood at $3.4 billion, a significant decline from its peak valuation of $9 billion when it went public on Nasdaq in 2021. Despite the fluctuations in market value, CEO Pedro Arnt remains optimistic about the company's future. He emphasized that DLocal's unique focus on emerging markets will enable it to stand out in the competitive UK payment landscape.

The decision to expand into the UK comes as DLocal continues to grow its global portfolio of authorizations. The company is poised to attract a diverse range of clients, from local startups to established international brands. In an industry where competition is fierce, Arnt noted that "rumors will emerge that someone's interested in the asset — but I wouldn't assume there's too much to that," indicating his awareness of market dynamics while remaining confident in DLocal's strategic position.

DLocal's approach not only highlights its ambition but also reflects broader trends in the global payment landscape. The firm strategically targets emerging markets that are often underserved by traditional payment solutions. By providing tailored services to these markets, DLocal is well-positioned to capture opportunities and drive growth.
