Pakistan's cricket team showcased remarkable resilience on day three of the Test match against South Africa, but they still face an uphill battle to salvage a draw. After being forced to follow on, the visitors managed to build a substantial opening partnership, yet they remain 208 runs behind South Africa's commanding lead of 615 runs.
The day began with Pakistan in a precarious position at 64 for 3, trailing South Africa by 314 runs. However, openers Babar Azam and Shan Masood revitalized their innings with a formidable 205-run partnership, marking the highest opening-wicket partnership for Pakistan since December 2022. Shan Masood played a pivotal role in this revival, finishing the day unbeaten on 102 runs, while Babar Azam contributed a solid 81 before being dismissed by Marco Jansen.
South Africa, having enforced the follow on after Pakistan fell short by 421 runs in their first innings, relied on their bowlers to dismantle the opposition. Kagiso Rabada was particularly effective, claiming three wickets, while spinners Keshav Maharaj and Maphaka each took two wickets to maintain pressure on the Pakistan batting lineup.
Despite their strong start, Pakistan's innings took a downturn following Azam's departure. The dismissal triggered a collapse, with the team losing their final seven wickets for just 76 runs. Babar Azam had earlier made 58 runs in the second innings but could not stabilize the innings as wickets tumbled around him.
As it stands, Pakistan faces a tough challenge with only two days of play remaining in the Test. They need to score an additional 208 runs to at least draw level with South Africa. The team's prospects look grim as they head into the final stages of the match.
